Every year on August 15, veterinary clinics and animal lovers across the country recognize Check the Chip Day, a timely reminder about the power of microchipping and the importance of keeping your pet’s information up to date.

At Easthampton Animal Hospital, we see firsthand how one small chip can make all the difference. Whether you’re a longtime pet parent or just welcomed a new furry friend into your home, this day is a great opportunity to check in and make sure your pet is protected.

What is a Microchip?

A microchip is a tiny device, roughly the size of a grain of rice, that’s implanted just under your pet’s skin, usually between the shoulder blades. The procedure is simple, quick, and no more uncomfortable than a routine vaccination.

Each chip contains a unique identification number. When a shelter or veterinary clinic scans the chip, they can access the number and use it to retrieve your contact details from the microchip registry.

But here’s the catch:
The microchip only works if your contact information is correct and up to date. That’s what Check the Chip Day is all about.

Why Checking the Chip Matters

Many pet owners assume that once their pet is microchipped, they’re set for life. But things change. You might:

  • Move to a new home
  • Switch phone numbers or email providers
  • Change your emergency contact
  • Rehome a pet to a friend or family member

If your information isn’t current in the microchip registry, the chip becomes virtually useless in helping reunite you with your pet.

According to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), pets with microchips are significantly more likely to be returned to their families—but only if the chip is registered and the info is accurate.

How to Check and Update Your Pet’s Microchip

If you’re not sure whether your pet’s microchip is registered, or what information is on file, here’s how to find out:

  1. Locate your pet’s microchip number. If you don’t know it, we can scan your pet at Easthampton Animal Hospital at no charge.
  2. Visit the Universal Pet Microchip Lookup Tool at www.petmicrochiplookup.org.
  3. Enter the microchip number to see which registry it’s connected to.
  4. Visit that registry’s website and log in to verify or update your contact details.

If your pet isn’t microchipped yet, don’t worry, it’s easy to fix! We can microchip your pet during any routine appointment, and we’ll help you with registration to ensure everything’s done right.

Microchipping: Peace of Mind That Lasts a Lifetime

Collars and tags are important, but they can break or fall off. A microchip is a permanent form of identification that can’t be removed or lost. It’s a one-time investment that offers lifelong protection and peace of mind.

If your pet ever gets lost, a microchip may be the only link back to you. It’s a safety net no pet should be without.
